A Little About Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic, whose capital is Santo Domingo, is located in the Caribbean and it is often confused with Dominica, which is also in the Caribbean. Bartholomew, who was Columbus' brother, founded Santo Domingo and about two years ago over three million people populated it.

Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492, and thus putting it under Spain's rule, but many years after this, it was also ruled by the French. The French, at this time were ruling in Haiti and thus begun several years of political battles.

Mr. Leonel Fernandez is presently the President of this independent Spanish-speaking country.

The Dominican Republic is one of the largest countries in the Leeward Antilles and it is also one of the most popular places that tourist visits. In fact, it is the second largest tourist attraction in the Caribbean. It is an ideal place for individuals as well as families to visit. This is due to the beaches, the water and animal parks, whale watching, golfing, horseback riding and aquariums and the list goes on.

In the past and presently, visitors are ecstatic at the joy they witness on the faces of the children, who lives in remote places here, when given small gifts such as a pen, pencil and erasers.

The currency of this country is the Dominican Peso, but in areas where they cater for tourist, the US dollar and Euro is also accepted. The Peso, at one point was up to par with the US currency, but this changed due to deprecation in the 1980's. However, with the consistent changes in the economy, the exchange rate is always up and down.
