Traveling With Your Kids

Family holidays are a major part of life when you have young children. The kids enjoy themselves when there, the parents get a chance to actually have time with their kids without the stress of work each day, and everyone gets the opportunity to participate in some activities that really make the time fly. This is all to do with when you actually arrive - but getting there can be the biggest pain, as long car journeys are fraught with possibilities for incredible noise, car sickness and upset children. As much as you may enjoy the holiday itself, the problems with car travel can really put a crimp in your enjoyment.

It is therefore a wise choice to give some thought to making the trip more of a pleasant experience for your kids. This requires a lot of planning, but that kind of planning can really be the difference between a good time had by all and a frustrating ordeal. And as long as it is all put in place at the right time, in the correct way, it can be a real sanity saver. The important thing is to tailor it to your kids. As an adult, you have been trained somewhere along the way to have patience for the less fun stuff in the knowledge that it will lead to the fun stuff. Kids have yet to learn this process.

One piece of advice that will never be a bad one is to spread a towel or a blanket across the back seat of your car. If your kids are eating on the journey and/or are prone to motion sickness, then there is no doubt that some mess will be created. In fact it is a natural fact that most kids will be prone to creating mess if they have to stay in the one spot for hours. As you cannot stop every time your kids want or need something, a bit of advance action can save a lot of emergency action. Taking food along means less stops for food, but obviously it can see stuff getting dropped in the car - a towel or blanket will protect the seats and can be shaken out when you reach your destination.

Bringing along toys and games is also an excellent idea. It depends on what kind of technology you have available, but particularly if you have a car with a DVD player installed - often these come with screens in the roof of the car that fold down, or in the back of the driver and front passenger's head rest - then you can ensure that your child's attention will be rapt. An in-car games console can have the very same benefit. A new toy or DVD that the child has never seen before may hold their attention for longer.

Depending on how long the journey is, it may well be necessary to plan stops. For yourself as much as for your children, the opportunity to stretch your legs and get a bit of a rest from the intensity of having to stay in one spot for so long is essential, stops tempers rising and discontent building, and if a child has unfortunately been sick or had another bodily function at an inopportune time, this allows a full and complete clean-up in addition to the emergency one you will have had earlier.
