Since jet lag is just a bodily response there are things that you can do to make sure that you are getting ready for your trip. Getting a good night's sleep the last 3 nights before your trip will drastically change the you overall energy levels once you are crossing those time zones and increase your ability to acclimate to a new night time. Additionally you can make those last few sleeps better by getting outside in the sunlight as much as possible during the day. This will promote your body's production of melatonin and will keep the levels high which is the guiding factor in telling your body when it's time to fall asleep.
The most overlooked practice that can pretty much solve a large number of simple ailments is proper hydration. But what does being properly hydrated mean. Well one thing is for sure a glass or two a day isn't going to get the job done. Your body need 3 to 4 liters a day to stay fully hydrated. Hydration is important to a traveler because the airplane cabin is continually dehydrating you during the flight and the longer the flight the more severely affected you will be when you arrive. By staying hydrated you give you body the best chance against the furthering the extent of jet lag.
So the next time someone tells you to trim your finger nails, eat raw tea leaves, or do something absurd to stop jet lag you can just smile and say "I'll be alright".
