How About Playing Tourist in Your Own Hometown?

When I go on vacation, visit other countries or travel to other cities for business, I usually look for the sites the area is famous for. I love playing tourist. It's so much fun not having to be somewhere for an appointment or having to make phone calls. I live and have a home business in Washington, DC where there are all kinds of famous landmarks and other tourist attractions. I came to realize that the tourists who come here know more about my hometown than I do.

It seemed the only time I would see those places myself was when friends came to the city and I would take them to visit some of the spots. It is usually the same locations that are priorities for visitors. It's not always possible to get to all of them; however, I always figured I'd get to those others I wanted to see, "someday." Then time goes by and another year has passed that I have not been "downtown."

So I started playing tourist and making time to go see some places this city that other tourists visit and know about. It is so much fun to take a day off and visit the 19th century Oak Hill Cemetery Park whose residents are mostly from the Civil War era, or Hillwood Estate, the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post (1887-1973), heir to the Post cereal fortune. Sometimes, I spend an entire winter Sunday afternoon at the Botanic Garden and then go into the National Gallery of Art for late lunch and to hear a free concert.

Playing tourist in your hometown can give you a breather and sometimes even a different perspective on where you live. In the US, most cities or town have some tourist attraction or historic site. You are probably live in or near one. Take some time off and start playing tourist yourself in your own home town.
