When I travel, I find that I enjoy mingling with the locals far better than roaming the streets and visiting the sights as a tourist with a camera around my neck and fanny pack on my side. The modern guidebook, epitomised perhaps by Lonely Planet, invented modern travel. No longer beholden to tour companies and their empty-headed schedules, people began to travel independently, and felt safe doing so. All the knowledge they might need was, after all, contained between the glossy covers of a recently updated book.

In the pages of my large, much thumbed India guide, I've established the fastest way to travel from Gorakphur to Dehradun and discovered the cheapest, and quite possibly dirtiest, place to eat in Delhi's Pahar Ganj. I've found a trekking company in the hills near Madikeri and a village homestay in Khuri. But guidebooks are more than just train schedules and a listing of sites. They're tactile, weighty and, as a result, somehow reassuring. I used the same guide as a pillow, a makeshift tripod and, once, to squash a brazen cockroach.

Today, the guidance available in a book, like all information, is being digitised, and moved quickly onto the pages of the internet or the applications of always-plugged-in iPhones. As it does, it often becomes free and more nuanced.

In China, like many countries, the Lonely Planet reigns supreme. Backpackers from everywhere follow its advice, and inevitably stay in the same hotels and hostels, visit the same sites and eat at the same restaurants. Publishers claim that their guides are definitive, and this allows us to feel that our experience of a place has been, in some ways, complete. People who have done most of what the Lonely Planet advises will often say - to my horror - that they have 'done' a place.

But Lonely Planet and its ilk might be near the end of their offline reign. Travel guides of quality have started to appear online. As these guides proliferate, travellers, with more access to information, are given a wider range of choices. No guide lists exactly the same places, in exactly the same way, and this might, I hope, mean that the end of 'doing' a place is nigh. Online guides often cater to niche audiences, or focus on specific regions, and this might lead to the creation of new, much smaller constellations, in the same way that guidebooks created backpackers.

I have, over the past two months, written two guides to travel in China: a brief guide to Shanghai, linked to the listings of City Weekend, a portal for the city's English speaking expats, and a Suzhou travel guide. I've discovered, in the process, how much work, and expense, goes into the writing of a travel guide. You must first get yourself to a destination. You then follow the advice of other travel guides, because it would be extremely laborious to start from scratch, and finally, once you have some sense of the place, you must try to discover new places, so that you can surpass what has already been written. This is, of course, how information grows. As it does, the notion of 'doing' a place, of seeing everything worth seeing, will slowly shatter.

We will, I expect, start to travel differently. Leaving the beaten track will become easier and, at the same time, more difficult. Perhaps people will less often travel to see well-documented sites and become more interested in travelling to meet people, to enjoy an experience that cannot be reproduced.

If the French Revolution is a period of history that fascinates you, then a trip to the Conciergerie is a must. This former palace became Paris' first prison, where thousands were jailed in the late 18th century, most of whom were executed by guillotine.

The building has a dramatic, if unpleasant past. Its most prominent resident was Queen Marie Antoinette, but it also held George Danton, a lawyer involved in the removal of the royal court from Versailles, the romantic poet Andre Chenier, in later years, and Madame Elizabeth, mistress of Napoleon III. Marie Antoinette's cello is now a chapel to her memory.

The building, with its spiked conical shaped towers and austere grey facade, stands a trifle gloomily in the complex of the Palais de Justice on the Ile de la Cite. It was built in the 14th century as a palace for King Philip IV, but was turned into a prison when the royal family moved to the nearby Louvre. High-ranking prisoners, such as Marie Antoinette, were given their own cells with a few comforts, while common criminals shared damp, dark cells known as oubliettes, or 'forgotten places'. It is said that many were tortured within its walls, creating fear among the residents of Paris that lasted for decades.

The Conciergerie ceased to be a prison in 1914, and became a centre of Paris' legal system, housing the law courts. At the same time it was declared a national historical monument and was opened to the public.

Visitors enter through the boulevard du Palais entrance and immediately set foot into the Salle des Gens d'Armes. One of the best-preserved Gothic-style medieval halls in Europe, this room would have been used by the royal household as a place to dine. From here, a tour takes you to the Galerie desPrisonniers, which contains a re-creation of the Salle de Toilette, where prisoners were prepared for execution.

Was it Adam Tas or Adam Kok, who wanted rights the 1700's, and no, I do not pretend to be an historian, but take a look at history, the French revolted against an elitist regime who wallowed in luxury while the masses starved, the Russian Tsars who lived a life of luxurious decadence until it crumbled around them, the champions of apartheid who suppressed basic human rights from the masses, feathering their own nests and employing their own kith and kin to the disadvantage of anyone of a different coloured skin or home language.

In the seventies and eighties in South Africa, strikes were a national pastime, more money please, less work please, fewer hours and more rights and benefits, some twenty years later, nothings changed, more money, less work, more benefits please. Let's have a dance, a few days off work, break a few windows, plants, hey, why not our one vehicles and buildings, they represent oppression don't they. The fact that a state building belongs to us all and gets paid for, indirectly or directly by each of us seems to be completely irrelevant, good grief! Just as an aside, I heard someone say yesterday, "you know, one thing about a lousy job, it's a lot better than no job...".

I could never understand why, during the race and other riots in the eighties, why they burned and broke down a school, perhaps a clinic or hospital, when a government office was available for this particular purpose, a "Department of Bantu Affairs" building, a police station, or some such base asset of the regime of the time, why the school and the clinic, why not the prison. Yes, I do digress, let's wind our way back to tourism, the industry that is actually more important, when measured in jobs, and foreign income, than gold mining, that has yet untapped resources and no end to the possibilities.

A Lifetime Of Travel

For almost as long as I can remember I have had an urge to travel and I have been lucky enough to achieve many of those dreams both through work that I have done and holidays I have taken. This still continues to this day and I think will only stop when I do. From a personal viewpoint the two most beautiful countries in the world are, in the Northern hemisphere, Switzerland, and in the Southern hemisphere, New Zealand.

I hope later this year I will be able to return to Northern Thailand and Laos where I used to live, I have friends there that have been there so long they are almost part of the scenery.

One question that I am often asked is that I must have spent a lot of money to be able to do this, but that is not the case. Just ask a student on gap year or a pensioner how they get on, a different story. What has been lacking is a comprehensive service on how to obtain travel cheaply and information products on other benefits relating to your travel plans. First, decide if you should take your pet with you. A few scenarios and alternatives will help with your decision.

If you are traveling by car and have little kids, I would advise leaving your dog at home. Also, if you are flying to your destination, it is best not to take your pet.

Pet sitters are a great alternative to boarding kennels. Call a few and set up appointments. When you interview them, ask if they are bonded (show proof), their fees, will they stay overnight, etc. If you hire a pet/house sitter they can water plants, retrieve your mail and paper, visit many times during the day and, some, stay in your home.

Locate a good boarding facility and visit before you decide to leave our pet. Check out a couple before you decide. Look around. Are they clean? Are the animals exercised and well cared for? Is there an odor? Make a list and check it off as you interview the owner and grounds. Your vet can also provide the names of good kennels in the area.

When you pack your dog's "suitcase" think essentials. Take a blanket or bed with his scent on it, a toy and chew, his dog food and treats, bowls, plastic bags, a few bottles of water from home so there won't be any stomach problems on the road, and a fold down crate.

Carry a copy of your dog's shot record with you. You might be asked for it at any time. A few years ago we were traveling by car and stopped at a rest area to stretch our legs and walk the dogs. A police officer happened to be there and asked us if we had our kids updated rabies information. Yes we did and showed it to him. So you never know, just be ready.

When you make your hotel reservations before you leave, ask if the hotel is pet friendly. If they are, let them know you are traveling with your dog. There is usually a fee for an animal in a hotel room.

Most hotels require that a pet be supervised at all times in the room and on the property. If you leave your dog alone in the room, put him in the crate with water and a chew. Then turn on the TV to medium level with a program that has both music and voices. We turn on the national weather program. Also put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door knob.

Always clean up after your dog. There is nothing worse than taking a leisurely stroll at a rest stop or hotel and stepping in dog poo. Picking up after your dog will keep pets on good terms with the travel world.

If you are going camping, be sure to check out the rules and regulations regarding pets in campgrounds and national parks.

NEVER leave a dog in a hot car. It is considered animal cruelty and against the law. Temperatures can rise dramatically even with the windows down and cause death.

Shirley Joyner, a credentialed travel agent at MTS Travel in Colorado Springs, has seen a lot of changes during her 30-plus years of experience. "People used to come to me and say, 'I want to go somewhere warm," and I would suggest destinations," she says. "Now they research online and come in knowing where they want to go and what they want to do."

When asked what the public might not understand about using a travel agent, Joyner replies, "For one thing, we don't charge the client to book tours and cruises." Also, special software allows the agent to compare airlines, times and fares on one computer screen, and to be aware of delays and cancellations. An individual booking online cannot access this information.

"For example," Joyner states, "A client booking a cruise couldn't get a specific date and a special request of a room with a balcony. I was able to do it for them."

Heightened security has complicated foreign travel; what you don't know could hurt you. A professional knows about travel concerns to certain parts of the world and can help acquire critically important visas, shots and passports. Travelers who book on their own without knowing the ins and outs can be left at the gate with nowhere to turn.

"A client booked a vacation," he says. "They checked out Barbados hotels online and chose one based on photos that implied the property was on the beach." It turned out the hotel was two blocks from the beach in an area devoid of amenities, such as shops and restaurants.

Another client booked an overseas trip themselves and couldn't wait to tell him what great deals they had gotten. "As they rattled off the cost of airfare, hotels, tours, etc., I added it up in my head. They paid about $3,000 more than it would have cost to go through a travel agent," he states.

Both agents have traveled extensively. "I take trips and don't tell the cruise people or the destination I am a travel agent so I can see it through my client's eyes," says Charlie Brown.

Travel agents are trained to ask the right questions to find out what the client is looking for. It's also important to match the age and lifestyle of the client to the destination and amenities. "I know of a couple who booked their honeymoon cruise only to discover that the majority of the passengers were much older. There wasn't much to do at night - the decks rolled up at 9," Brown comments.

Both travel agents take seriously the fact that you are coming to them with your hard earned dollars. They both strive to give the client a satisfying travel experience, since so much of their business is repeat business or comes by word of mouth.

Ask a friend, do a web search or check for professional affiliations, such as the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).

Aside from the games itself, it will be thrilling to watch your favorite baseball team at big time venues like the Yankee Stadium. Construction Details

The construction began in 2006, but it took quite a time before it was finished because it was enveloped with much controversies. Among the criticisms that this has gotten was about its financier. The residents of New York City did not like the idea that the city used public funds for its construction than focusing on other more important problems and areas of concern in the place. The total cost for the stadium's construction reached about $1.5 billion, which made it the most costly stadium all over the world.

The architect that handled the construction was from the firm known as Populous. The exterior of the stadium contains 11000 pieces of Indiana limestone, pre-cast concrete and granite. Its interior features hundreds of pictures that capture the rich background of the Yankees. These photos came from the partnership of the New York Daily News and the Yankees. They collaborated for an exhibit that was called The Glory of the Yankees Photo Collection. The Yankees hired Sports & The Arts to come up with about 1300 of the best photographs about the theme that they want to exude, which sources range from Getty Images, the Daily News, Major League Baseball and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The seats are constructed like how these looked like on the original stadium. It has a grandstand that reaches over the foul poles and bleacher seats are beyond the outfield fences. The stadium is filled with amenities. If you will compare this with the previous stadium, this has 63 percent more space and is larger by 500,000 square feet. This also has wider concourses with open sight lines. The building is wired with about 227 Ethernet cable that it was this was hailed as the future proof by David Holland, vice president and treasurer of Cisco. There are video monitors in the area, which is over 1100 high-def monitors. This ballpark contains about $10 million of baseball merchandise.

The stadium has a clubhouse that is complete with everything that you expect to find in it. It has a museum and lots of restaurants. There is also a Hard Rock Café within the ballpark.

When you think of Dubai nowadays you will often think of one of the many Mega Projects such as Burj Dubai, Dubailand or the Palm Islands. Other mega projects under construction are Business Bay and Metro Dubai.

Burj Dubai, meaning Dubai Tower, will most likely become the world's tallest building with an estimated height of around 818 m (2,684 ft).It is expected to be completed late 2009 and will house the first Armani Hotel, private apartments and corporate offices.

On September 24, 2007 the Dubai Tower became the world's tallest free-standing structure with it's 555.3 m (1,822 ft) surpassing the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. The tallest building in the world will become the centrepiece of new Downtown Dubai which also includes: BurjDubai Lake Hotel, Dubai Mall, BurjDubai Old Town, Burj Residences E, Burj Residences T, Burj Residences W, The Lofts, South Ridge, Burj Views and Boulevard Walk.

In august 2008 the Tower of Dubai set a new record height of 2,257 feet and has more than 160 stories.With the exterior almost finished workers have started on the interior. Up till now the final height is still a secret.Taiwan's Taipei 101 with a height of 1,667 feet and holding the record since 2004 was surpassed in the June 2008.

DubaiLand
Dubailand, the biggest theme park in the world, will have 45 mega projects and 200 sub projects when finished in 2018. Already operational are Dubai Autodrome, The Global Village and the Al Sahra Desert Resort. This theme park is in size twice as big as Disneyland and the Disneyworld resorts put together.

The Dubai Metro system will be the longest fully automated rail system in the world. It will consist of 2 lines, the Red Line and the Green Line. The Red Line (phase 1) is expected to be complete in September 2009 and will run along the Sheikh Zayed Road on a viaduct. The second phase, called the Green line will be built mostly underground and is scheduled to be completed in March 2010. In total the Metro will have a total of 70 kilometres (43.5 miles) of lines, and 42 stations ( 9 will be underground stations). The Red Line will run for 50 kilometre (31 miles) with 35 stations from Jebel Ali Port, the American University in Dubai, through the city centre, and to the Airport Free Zone. The Green Line will be 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) with 22 stations from Festival City, through the city centre, Dubai International Airport Terminals 1 and 3, and to Rashidiya.

Dubai Waterfront
The Dubai Waterfront is a conglomeration of canals and artificial islands forming an arc around the Palm Jebel Ali. It will extend the coastline of Dubai by 800 kilometers and will house about 400.000 people. The First phase of Dubai Waterfront is Madinat Al Arab the downtown centre of the development with the Al Burj one of the world's tallest skyscrapers.

Hydropolis
Dubai Underwater Hotel, Hydropolis, the first underwater hotel in the world, is one of Dubai's mega projects in the making. The 220 suits are at a depth of 20 meters and spending a night costs $5,500. The total investment for the project was $500-million.Constructed from a combination of concrete, steel and clear Plexiglas, Hydropolis will be the world's first underwater luxury hotel.This unique hotel will be completed by 2009.

Vacationing with kids in a car is no vacation. Or another way of saying this is "being cooped up with the kids in the car is the pits". If you don't plan on popping in a DVD and letting the kids watch endless movies here are sanity saving ideas for your car trip.

Long trips can be boring for kids and every two seconds (well maybe one) they are asking, "are we there yet"? Plan ahead before the trip to make your drive pleasant for everyone-of course this works best with school age children.

- Get a map and show the children before leaving where you will be traveling. If your children are old enough give each one their own map and markers. They can plot the trip so they can see you are getting closer. Before leaving home have them mark on the map certain destinations and at that point in the trip hand out a treat or tell a new story etc.

- Allow enough time for the trip. Have frequent rest stops. This will not only help the children but it will help you. Drive two hours then get out and do some exercises like touching your toes, jumping jacks, running around the car three times both ways. You and your children will be refreshed with the break.

- At certain intervals if you are taking it leisurely stop at a school or a city park and let them burn off some energy on the playground equipment. Go to a local deli or grocery store in whatever town you are in and buy the fixings for a picnic. The added bonus is that the kids can run around. Or stop at a restaurant where there are play areas for children to play.

When I was a child we would travel 625 miles from one state to another. One of my memories is stopping at the same place every year, eat a lunch my mother had packed and have a licorice ice cream cone across from the park. We would then play for 30 minutes while my mom took a nap. I wonder if that is why I love licorice anything to this day.

- Make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks for the trip. Bring them out at different intervals. Bring plenty of water in a cooler and other drinks your family likes.

- Include plastic cups, one dishtowel for each person, a Frisbee to eat out of or to play with at a rest stop. Baby wipes are a must for everyone in the car.

- Have plenty of their favorite music. Have sing along songs that the whole family can sing to.

- Each child needs to have their own book bag or back pack. Stuff it full of things for them to do. Reading books, coloring books, new small toys, and one of their favorite. Some could be wrapped and at certain places they have marked on the map they could open this surprise.

- Travel games are great fun because they are the only time they can be played so they are new and different. Games like "I Spy or also called Travel Bingo"-spy license plates from different states, an animal, a certain kind of road or building (barn, gravel etc), and different road signs.

- Bring lap pads to play cards on or to eat on. It could be a travel desk suspended from the back of the front seat.

- Electronic video games are great to have in the car as it helps time pass more quickly for you and for them.

Long trips can be boring for children and a pain for the parents. With some planning before the trip it can be fun for everyone and might be the best part of the trip for the children.

According to the Happy Planet Index, Costa Ricans have the highest life satisfaction in the world, thanks to their long life expectancy which is slightly longer than the USA average, combined with their tiny environmental impact, which is 75% smaller than the United States' per person equivalent.

Costa Rica has become well known throughout the world for its excellent level of environmental protection. Almost one third of the country has been protected by a system of national parks, conservation areas and natural reserves.

Some of the most popular protected areas include the World Heritage Site of Corcovado National Park which is famous for its mangrove swamps, tapirs and macaws, the beautiful beach-side Manuel Antonio National park, and Tortuguero National Park, a favorite nesting ground for endangered sea turtles.

In a separate recent survey the country was voted the number one Latin America travel destination thanks to its astonishing range of national parks protected the world's biggest concentration of exotic, and often endangered, animal species ranging from poison arrow frogs, green leatherback turtles, the resplendent quetzal and the jaguar.

Staycations Are the New Black

Tourism has changed. The trend used to be to jaunt off to Europe and see 18 countries in 10 days. Due to the economic downturn, who has the money? People are staying close to home and having "staycations." And why not? In 1997 more than 30 million people visited the state of Arizona. They take their vacations here and so should you.

Once each week we will profile a great local location to spend a day, a weekend or more. Today's location includes some great hikes, some good grub and a goldmine. Approximately 40 miles from Central Phoenix is the Lost Dutchman State Park. It's named after Jacob Waltz, "the Dutchman" (actually a native of Germany). In the 1870's he discovered a gold mine in the Superstition Wilderness. He and his partner worked the mine and buried the gold somewhere in the Superstitions. Legend has it that his partner was killed by Apache Indians and Jacob died before telling anyone where the mine was or the gold was buried. Each year treasure hunters come from all over the world looking for the gold.

You can try to find the lost gold or you can just enjoy a wonderful hike with spectacular views. You'll find over 180 miles of trails to explore. Trail lengths range from less than one mile to over 18 miles. A great introduction to the Superstitions begins at the Treasure Loop trail. You can hike this simple 2.4 mile loop or combine it with one or more of the many connected trails to create a more challenging hike. And bring the dog as pets are welcome.

My Review of American Adventures and Foam Factory in Atlanta

Last week me and the family went to the American Adventures Family Fun park. The weather was real HOT. The parking lot was extremely full. Lots of people was taking advantage of the hot day by getting wet at the water park next door. Six Flags White Water seems to be a lot of fun also but it was much more pricey.

American Adventures is like a small carnival with slightly better rides. Their main idea is to attract smaller children that normally would not be able to ride the rides at their larger park, Six Flags.

"Family Fun, Birthday Parties & Group Events! Welcome to American Adventures, a kid's Birthday Party and Attraction paradise conveniently located just north of Atlanta. A day at American Adventure is packed with fun rides, but we also have special celebrations, family events, and seasonal festivities, just to make sure you get your fill of fun! Now Open Every Day! American Adventures is now open year round" Enjoy our rides and attractions throughout the entire year! We have also extended our hours. We can open any day or time for groups! You'll have a blast!"

Some of the rides were closed which was unfortunate, but this was probably due to the lack of employees working. I would notice that they would shutdown a ride and then later reopen it. What I love about it was the Lines was REAL Short. Most of times we just got on right after the ride was over. These rides are perfect for children ages 2 to 9 years old.

FOAM FACTORY

It's basically a large indoor play area that you would see at ChuckECheese or McDonalds. Kids climb on ropes, nets, stairs, and throw small foam balls at people. It was ok but it seem that it would need a little fixing. Parts of it was either broken or just plain old.

How to Plan and some TIPS

It was my wife and I and our 2 1/2 year old child was going to the park. I spent roughly around $20 total for about 3 hours of entertainment. This is how I did it:

* Signup for the Coupon at their website to get $3 off and print it
* You can take water and snacks with you. Off course its much more expensive their
* The parking cost $10 but keep the receipt
* At the ticketing Purchase Unlimited for a Child and give them the Parking receipt and coupon
* You don't need to purchase for adults with a paying child
* All this for less than $20. It's a cheap outing for the family

Overall I give this place about a B. I had to travel about 30 miles to get there so It's not like I'm ready to go back anytime. Check it out If you just happen to be around the area and need something to do.

If you book directly with a schedule airline, and that airline goes bust, your financial protection is very limited or nil.

Trust accounts are operated by a number of travel organisations and afford some protection for the traveller in that they don't pay your money over to the suppliers until you have travelled, however, if the company operating the trust goes bust before you travel, it is then up to the trustees which creditors are paid out of the remaining monies in the trust fund.

Supplier failure insurance is another option being offered to travellers these days, but as with all insurance policies, the devil is in the detail and the level of protection can vary. You need to check the small print.

Unfortunately, things can go wrong on your holiday, but if you understand your rights and book your holiday through a reputable operator, anything problems that may occur can usually be corrected without any impact on your holiday.

The Mississippi River is one of the most popular rivers in the United States. The river's length is 3,770 kilometers making it the 2nd longest river in the country. The river begins at the Lake Itasca part of Minnesota up to the Gulf of Mexico.

The history of the Mississippi River was traced back over 300,000 years ago. It was the Illinois glaciers which have barred the River close to Rock Islands that caused it to divert to its existing route, and stretching towards the western borders of Illinois.

A change in the route of the Mississippi River was caused by earthquakes next to the fault zone of New Madrid which sits at the center of St. Louis and Memphis. The three major earthquakes which happened during the year 1811 and 1812 have caused the temporary reversal of the river. The Reverie settlement located in Tennessee was stopped from the Tipton County and was diverted to the area of the Arkansas River. The earthquakes have also led to the formation of the Reelfoot Lake.

Later on, the lower part of the Mississippi River have naturally diverted to its ending path to the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico. This phenomenon occurred because river's channel was blocked with deposits of mud. The water level rose as a result.

It passes through ten major states of the United States and serves as boundaries for these states.

In addition, The River is combined with other rivers which serve as tributaries. These rivers include St. Croix River, Minnesota River, Wisconsin River, Iowa River, Skunk River, Des Moines River and the Illinois River. The river also has sub-tributaries, namely the Platte River and the Tennessee River.

Sahara Desert is among the world's most popular desert. It is featured in some of the known Hollywood movies because of its distinct features.

Sahara Desert is considered the hottest and largest desert in the whole world, which covers most part of North Africa. It measures around 800 to 1,200 miles from north to south and 4,800 kilometers from west to east. Africa was inevitably divided into two regions because of the desert's very vast area. On the western side, the desert is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean while on the eastern side is the Red Sea. On the northern part of the desert, it is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlas Mountains.

The Sahara Desert is composed of abundant mountains, basins, plains, plateaus and sand seas. Mount Koussi is the highest portion of the Sahara which measures 3,415 meters. The lowest point is the Qaterra Depression located in Egypt 436 feet below.

Basically, Sahara Desert is totally covered with several types of dunes and sand sheets. Such dunes include blown out dunes, transverse dunes and tied dunes. There are even formations of pyramidal dunes reaching at around 150 meters high. The formations of dunes have been studied by many archaeologist but they were not able to find answers on how the dunes have been created. It remains a mystery until today.

Weather in the Sahara Desert is mostly dry with occasional rainfall for weeks. After that, it will not rain again for several years. The northern part has a subtropical type of weather, while it is tropical in the southern part. Winter season in the southern part is very mild. The north part is between cool to cold. Snow begins to form in some of the mountain peaks of the desert. During summer, the total area of the desert is very hot reaching even at its highest temperature of 59°C.

Niger River and the Nile River are the only permanent rivers running across the desert. Other rivers are usually seasonal and only come alive on occasional rainfalls and most of the time left as dry river beds.

Saharan countries rely so much on the abundance metallic minerals spread in the desert. Plenty of iron ore deposits can be found in Mauritania and Algeria while smaller deposits can be found in countries like Niger, Western Sahara, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco. Besides iron ore deposits, Algeria is benefiting from its abundant oil, the major product contributor for its economy.

The Sahara Desert has a total population of around four million. The majority resides in countries such as Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Western Sahara. Dominant groups are the Tuareg tribes which belong to the Berber groups. Major cities of the Sahara includes the capital of Mauritania Nouakchott, Chad, Tamanrasset, Ghardaia, Timbuktu, Faya-Largeau, Ouargla, Hassi Messaoud, El Oued, Agadez, Ghat and Bechar.

Many of the inhabitants in the desert are called nomads. They travel in caravans looking for trade in other countries of the desert in order to survive. Trade has been one of the major sources of income for the inhabitants of the desert.

The soil of the Sahara is organically inactive and is salty. This is the reason why vegetable plantation is not existent. Only corn, dates and other fruits are grown in some of the desert's fertile oases which cover a land area of about 200,000 square kilometers.

Animals such as the jackals, antelopes, foxes, deer, baboon, mongoose, cape hare, gazelles and hyena exist in the desert. These animals are well adjusted and can survive with the harsh weather in the Sahara. There are 300 species of birds that can be found in this desert.

Especially when traveling abroad, it is easy to instantly think about flying to your destination, but there are often alternatives which will almost certainly be greener, could be cheaper and will often become part of the fun of the holiday.

Within Europe in particular there are plenty of options to travel by ferry, train or coach. The numerous UK ferry ports travel to various destinations in both northern and southern Europe with the longer journeys often a mini holiday in themselves. Once at your destination, look into train or coach travel for the remainder of your journey. Coach travel from the UK is also an option with companies offering various packages across Europe.

You can, of course, travel by train direct from the UK to mainland Europe using the Eurostar.
